How to Keep Your Water Level Adjusted

Proper Water Level is Important. poolbutlertx.com

Maintaining proper water level in your Flower Mound pool is very important – but it’s also very easy

Flower Mound has long been – and continues to be – among the most desirable areas to live in Dallas/Fort Worth. Worth. Great infrastructure, great schools, exceptional shopping, dining, and entertainment options. The beautiful and diverse landscapes – from homes tucked away in rolling hills with solid, mature oak groves to sprawling new homesites on open prairie grasslands make this community among the greatest in the Metroplex…and the nation!

Your pool adds exceptional value to the value of your home; the mild Texas climate also provides many days and nights to enjoy your own private backyard oasis. As with any home investment, though, pools require proper and regular maintenance to continue operating efficiently and effectively.

Monitoring and maintaining your pool’s water level may be one of the most important aspects of keeping your pool looking great and running properly. Good news…it’s also one of the easiest things for you to do on your own. If, however, you’re finding your pool to be more effort than enjoyment, no worries. Call us now and let Pool Butler take care of it for you. We have been providing excellent service to Flower Mound for over 25 years. We know the difficulties that come with keeping your pool pristine at all times. We’re experts at delivering the best balance of quality, reliability, and affordability

What is the Proper Water Level?

For most pools, the ideal water level is about halfway up the skimmer filter opening. The many hot, sunny Texas summer days can cause water to evaporate quickly, up to 1.5 inches per week. In contrast, after those heavy rainstorms, you might notice the water level rising above the skimmer. In that case, draining some water may be necessary

Tips to Maintain Proper Water Level it’s easy!

  • Check Regularly: Make it a habit to check the water level at least once a week. In summer, evaporation rates are higher, so…give your pool a little extra love.
  • Adjust Accordingly: If the water level is below halfway on your skimmer inlet, run a garden hose into your pool and add water. If the water level is OVER the entire skimmer inlet, that can be a problem, too; drain some water so the skimmer can operate properly to help keep your pool free of debris.

Too busy or not sure? No problem…we have an answer…

  • Consider an Automatic Water Leveler (Autofill): Call us to discuss installing an autofill. It’s a popular, automated, cost-effective solution that saves you time and effort. Pool Butler is your local source for reliable, certified, trained, and insured professionals in pool remodel, repair, upgrades, and more. We do pretty much everything except build pools!
  • Keep an eye on the weather: Texas weather can vary, from guaranteed hot, sunny summers to more unpredictable seasonal weather extremes. Flower Mound is certainly no exception. Consider the potential impact of weather on your pool’s proper water level and overall health. An ounce of prevention… (pun intended…but it can mean gallons of clean, clear water!)
  • Don’t forget those very rare, but potentially impactful, multi-day winter freezes. We see the impact of unexpected deep freezes every year. The events are short-lived, but their effects can be devastating. If you’re not familiar, mark your calendar to call Pool Butler before the holidays. We have practical approaches to help you avoid potentially big problems.

Can’t seem to maintain the proper water level?

A few things that may require you to add water more frequently:

  • a larger pool – the average pool size is 18,000 – 20,000 gallons
  • an “active” pool – kids splashing, performing “cannonballs”
  • a lot of direct sun all day long

Still concerned?

If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’ll be happy to inspect your pool and ensure everything is in proper working order. Catching small issues early can prevent bigger, more costly problems down the line.

Pool Butler is your local, full-service provider. We do everything except build pools. Our employees are fully trained, certified, licensed, and insured.

Why Proper Water Level Is Important

Your pool water level impacts nearly every aspect of its functionality and maintenance. A proper supply of water is pretty much the “lifeblood” of your entire pool system.

  • Drives your skimmer and filtration systems
    • Water too low – dirt and debris can’t make it into your skimmer and filtration systems.
    • Water too high – same problem (if water level is above the top of your skimmer inlet)
  • Circulates fresh water – and supports systems such as the water heater.
    • Water too low – water can’t make it into the skimmer inlet, which is a component of your circulation system (along with other, such as the typical drain on the bottom of most pools).
    • Water too high – doesn’t impact circulation as much as it does filtration.
  • Distributes chemicals properly and effectively.
    • Water too low – same as circulation; if water can’t make it into the skimmer inlet, it can’t distribute chemicals effectively across the entire pool system.
    • Water too high – doesn’t impact circulation as much as it does filtration.
  • Helps drive pool vacuums properly (together with your filtration system).
    • Water too low – many pool vacuums rely upon the suction created by your filtration/circulation systems. Proper water flow into your skimmer inlet is critical to making most vacuums work effectively (along with clean pump filters).
    • Water too high – doesn’t impact most vacuums (but don’t let it get too high anyway…)
  • Improper water circulation stresses your pool’s systems, which can lead to costly repairs.
    • Water too low – easy example: your pump is sucking air instead of water; in this scenario, circulation and distribution is basically non-existent. In addition, it can dry out and/or overheat your pump, causing damage.
    • Water too high – not applicable; your circulation system is happy as long as water is flowing through it properly. But be nice and maintain proper water level for all the other reasons that DO matter.

Seasonal Weather Considerations

Never underestimate Mother Nature. Like all of North Texas, Flower Mound experiences it all – from blazing summer heat, to torrential rains, to those nasty Arctic cold snaps. We’re here to help reduce/eliminate stress on you and your pool all year round.

  • Heavy rainfall can result in high water levels as well as diluting proper chemical balances.
  • High summer temperatures and long stretches of sunny days in July and August cause extreme evaporation, as well as other considerations, like diminishing chlorine levels.
  • Those occasional, nasty, prolonged freezes in January and February can wreak costly havoc on pools. Call us to get on our schedule for a preventive winter system check/service.

If keeping your pool’s water levels properly maintained is a challenge at any time – whether it’s due to work, family, or just a busy schedule – Pool Butler is here to help.
